F.J. Bamkin Ltd is truly a family business, founded in the 1850s by Mrs Sarah Bamkin, in spite of the restrictions for women in business.
Sarah, the great-grandmother of the present Managing Director,
Mr Andrew Hamilton, used her husband’s name to become one
of the biggest local employers, manufacturing woollen socks for all walks of life.
Continuing the family tradition, Sarah’s daughter became the next Managing Director and over time the Bamkin Sock has become an international market leader.
Achievements in export markets resulted in a visit by HRH Princess Anne, in her role as President of the British knitting and Clothing Export Council.
The strength and success of the company has led to the expansion of production requiring relocation to larger premises facilitating continuing progress into the 21st century.
